Trump Asks Supreme Court to Delay January 19 TikTok Ban to Save Platform
Dec 28, 2024, 03:20 AM
President-elect Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to pause a law that would ban the social media platform TikTok on January 19, the day before his inauguration on January 20. In a legal brief filed on Friday, Trump's legal team requested the delay to allow his incoming administration to pursue a 'political resolution' to the issue. The ban requires TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the app or face a ban due to national security concerns over its connections to China. Trump's move marks a reversal from the current administration's position, as he seeks to negotiate a deal to save the platform once he takes office. His lawyers argued that he has the 'deal-making experience, electoral mandate, and political will' to address the issue after his inauguration.
