Turkey Convinces Russia, Iran for Bloodless Assad Regime Collapse at Doha Summit
Dec 13, 2024, 07:15 PM
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has revealed that Turkey engaged in diplomatic efforts with Russia and Iran to ensure the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria would occur with minimal bloodshed. Fidan stated that these negotiations, which took place in Doha, convinced both countries not to intervene militarily in support of Assad. He emphasized that the regime was already very weak, and had it received support, the situation could have turned very bloody. The talks aimed to pave the way for a peaceful transition, highlighting Turkey's strategic shift under President Erdoğan to address threats proactively rather than waiting for them to reach Turkey. Fidan also mentioned that the Syrian opposition, with the support of Turkey, has been working to meet the needs of the Syrian people, indicating a focus on humanitarian concerns.
