President Yoon Faces Travel Ban; Police Raid His Office, Arrest Police Chief in Insurrection Probe
Dec 11, 2024, 03:05 AM
South Korean police on Wednesday raided the presidential office of President Yoon Suk-yeol as part of an unprecedented investigation into his brief declaration of martial law last week. Authorities have imposed a travel ban on President Yoon amid accusations of insurrection connected to the martial law declaration on December 3. The chief prosecutor stated he would not hesitate to arrest President Yoon for insurrection if warranted. The police chief became the latest high-ranking official to be arrested in the expanding probe. In addition to the presidential office, police conducted searches at the National Police Agency, Seoul Metropolitan Police, National Assembly Police Guards, and the Army Special Warfare Command headquarters. The ongoing investigation marks the first time a sitting South Korean president is being investigated on insurrection charges, raising concerns about political stability in the country.
