Trump to Issue Executive Order Delaying TikTok Ban, Proposes 50% U.S. Ownership
Jan 19, 2025, 04:00 PM
President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order on Monday to delay the U.S. ban on TikTok, which went into effect at midnight. TikTok, owned by China's ByteDance, became inaccessible to U.S. users due to the ban. Trump is urging tech companies not to let the popular video-sharing app remain inaccessible and proposes a joint venture with current or new owners, in which the United States would hold a 50% ownership stake. The executive order would extend the period before the law's prohibitions take effect, allowing more time for a deal that addresses national security concerns. Trump assured that companies assisting TikTok would not face liability before the order is issued.
