Severe Solar Storm Triggers Spectacular Aurora Displays, Reaches G4 Levels

A powerful X1.8 solar flare from Region 3848 on the Sun has triggered a severe geomagnetic storm, which is currently impacting Earth. The flare, which peaked at 0156 UTC on October 9, was followed by a coronal mass ejection (CME) that is expected to reach Earth between late October 10 and early October 11. The storm has the potential to reach G4 levels, with some forecasts suggesting it could even escalate to G5. This geomagnetic activity is causing spectacular aurora displays visible as far south as Alabama, Texas, and even Key Largo, Florida. The Northern Lights have been seen across the U.S., including in New York, Washington D.C., and Connecticut, as well as in parts of Europe such as Germany and Poland. The storm is also raising concerns about potential impacts on power grids and communication systems, especially as the U.S. is dealing with major back-to-back hurricanes. Additionally, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is visible in imagery, and an S2 Solar Radiation Storm is also occurring.
