Sun Emits X9.0-Class Solar Flare, Largest Since 2017; Geomagnetic Storm Expected
Oct 3, 2024, 08:15 AM
The Sun has emitted a significant X9.0-class solar flare, the largest since 2017, originating from sunspot region AR3842. This event follows an earlier X7.1-class flare on October 1st. The recent X9.0 flare has caused widespread radio blackouts and is expected to trigger a geomagnetic storm that could impact Earth from October 3rd to 5th. The flare, classified as R3 (Strong) on the NOAA scale, has led to a coronal mass ejection (CME) heading towards Earth. The geomagnetic storm could result in disruptions to satellite communications, power grids, and may cause vivid displays of the Northern Lights across the Northern and Midwestern U.S., as well as parts of the UK. NOAA has issued G1-G3 (Minor to Strong) geomagnetic storm watches for the upcoming days, with the peak expected on October 4th. The solar activity is part of Solar Cycle 25, which has seen increased solar flare activity recently.
