ICC Seeks Arrest of Myanmar's Acting President Min Aung Hlaing for Crimes Against Rohingya Muslims
Nov 27, 2024, 10:32 AM
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Khan, has requested an arrest warrant for Myanmar's military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who serves as Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services. He is accused of crimes against humanity, including deportation and persecution, committed against the Rohingya, a mainly Muslim minority, during military operations in 2016 and 2017 that led to the mass exodus into Bangladesh. Khan recently visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh and highlighted that while Myanmar is not an ICC member, the court has jurisdiction because some crimes were committed on Bangladeshi territory, an ICC member state. The move signifies an international effort to hold Myanmar's military accountable for human rights violations against the Rohingya.
