ICC Seeks Arrest Warrant for Myanmar's Acting President Min Aung Hlaing Over Rohingya Crimes Against Humanity
Nov 27, 2024, 12:00 PM
The International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan has announced an application for an arrest warrant for Myanmar's military leader and Acting President, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, for alleged crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya Muslim minority. The charges include deportation and persecution during military operations in 2016 and 2017, committed in Myanmar and in part in Bangladesh, which resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya. Khan recently visited the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, where he stated, "I met with Rohingya women who spoke with clarity and purpose about the need for accountability." This move represents a significant step towards holding Myanmar's military accountable for actions widely condemned by the international community.
