ICC Prosecutor Seeks Arrest Warrant for Myanmar's Min Aung Hlaing Over Rohingya Persecution
Nov 27, 2024, 09:18 AM
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim A.A. Khan KC, has announced an application for an arrest warrant against Min Aung Hlaing, the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's military, for crimes against humanity. These crimes include the deportation and persecution of the Rohingya Muslim minority, which took place during the 2017 military operations. The application was filed before Pre-Trial Chamber I and alleges that these acts were committed both in Myanmar and partly in Bangladesh, where Khan visited the Rohingya refugee camps. The ICC's move seeks to address the widespread abuses against the Rohingya, marking a significant step towards accountability for the military's actions.
