China Begins 'Joint Sword-2024B' Drills Near Taiwan; Aircraft Carrier Involved, Taiwan Dispatches Forces
Oct 13, 2024, 10:59 PM
China has initiated a new round of military drills near Taiwan, including naval exercises led by the aircraft carrier Liaoning. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command announced the 'Joint Sword-2024B' exercises, which began at 5:30 a.m. on October 14, encompassing joint sea-air combat readiness patrols, blockade and control of key ports and areas, strikes on sea and land targets, and the seizure of comprehensive battlefield control. China has stated that these drills are a 'stern warning to the separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces.' Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense reported increased Chinese military activity near its territory, including Chinese naval vessels crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese Coast Guard detected unusual movements of Chinese Coast Guard ships starting on Sunday, with some ships conducting inspections in waters around Taiwan and patrolling in convoys. Taiwan has dispatched 'appropriate forces' to monitor and respond accordingly. The Taiwanese government strongly condemned China's actions, describing them as 'irrational and provocative' and a 'blatant provocation' that threatens international peace and order. Taiwan called on China to 'return to peace and rationality' and engage in dialogue with its democratically elected government, emphasizing President Lai's willingness to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait. The PLA also released new combat training videos, emphasizing their readiness and capability to engage in combat missions and prominently featuring the phrase 'to sleep with weapons under the pillow and wait.' The drills involve the navy, army, air force, and rocket force conducting joint military exercises around Taiwan's northern, eastern, and southern waters, focusing on joint patrols and examining joint operation capabilities. China has not specified an end date for the exercises. The increased military activities have elevated tensions in the region, with Taiwan accusing China of undermining regional peace and stability. The drills are seen as a response to President Lai's recent National Day speech, although Taiwan asserts that it has shown goodwill and a desire for peace.
