Norovirus Outbreaks Surge Across US, CDC Reports 91 Cases in Early December, More Than Double Previous Years
Dec 31, 2024, 01:00 PM
Norovirus outbreaks are surging across the United States this winter, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 91 outbreaks during the week of Dec. 5. This number is more than double the highest number of outbreaks reported in the same time frame over the past few years. The highly contagious virus, often referred to as the 'stomach bug' or 'stomach flu,' causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Norovirus spreads easily through direct contact, contaminated food or water, and touching contaminated surfaces. The CDC advises thorough handwashing with soap and water as a key preventive measure, as hand sanitizers are not effective against the virus.
