Norovirus Cases Surge in U.S.; CDC Reports 91 Outbreaks, Advises Soap and Water Handwashing
Dec 30, 2024, 06:19 PM
Norovirus cases are surging in parts of the United States this winter, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most recent CDC data shows there were 91 outbreaks of norovirus reported during the week of December 5, up from 69 outbreaks the last week of November. This marks an increase compared to previous years, which saw a maximum of 65 outbreaks reported during the first week of December. Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach bug, often misnamed as the 'stomach flu,' characterized by sudden vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain. It often spreads in confined spaces such as cruise ships, day care centers, and college dorms. Health officials advise thorough handwashing with soap and water, as alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective against norovirus. Cleaning surfaces with bleach-based disinfectants, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking food fully, and staying home when sick can help prevent the spread of the virus.
