Norovirus Outbreaks Surge to 91 in US, 16 on Cruise Ships Affecting 1,894 Passengers: CDC
Jan 2, 2025, 12:46 PM
Norovirus outbreaks are surging across the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 91 outbreaks in the first week of December, a significant increase from the 69 outbreaks the previous week. The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program also noted a rise in norovirus cases on cruise ships, with 16 outbreaks recorded in 2024, the highest since 2012. These outbreaks have affected 1,894 passengers and 245 crew members. Notably, the Queen Mary 2 experienced two consecutive outbreaks in December, impacting a total of 464 passengers and 77 crew members. Norovirus, highly contagious and causing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain, typically spreads through direct contact, contaminated food or water, and surfaces. The CDC advises rigorous handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals to prevent transmission.
