Norovirus Outbreaks Surge to 91 in US During Week of December 5, CDC Reports
Dec 29, 2024, 01:07 PM
Cases of norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug, are surging across parts of the United States this winter, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most recent figures show 91 outbreaks were reported during the week of December 5, a rise from the 69 outbreaks recorded the previous week. Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for 58% of such infections annually, causing 19 to 21 million illnesses, 900 deaths, 109,000 hospitalizations, and 465,000 emergency room visits each year. The virus is characterized by sudden vomiting and diarrhea and is most commonly spread from November to April. There is no medication available for treatment, and rehydration is recommended. Outbreaks are frequently seen in settings like cruise ships, nursing homes, jails, schools, and other places where people are in close proximity.
