CDC state-level reports on norovirus outbreaks
Norovirus Outbreaks Surge to 91 in U.S. This Winter, Exceeding Typical Maximums
Dec 30, 2024, 02:41 PM
Cases of norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug, are surging across the United States this winter, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC reported 91 outbreaks during the week of Dec. 5, a significant increase from the 69 outbreaks reported the previous week. This number exceeds the maximum of 65 outbreaks typically reported during that period in past years. Norovirus, known for causing sudden vomiting and diarrhea, is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for 58% of such infections annually. Outbreaks are commonly seen in settings where people are in close proximity, such as cruise ships, nursing homes, jails, and schools. The virus spreads easily, with as few as 10 viral particles capable of causing infection. Symptoms include nausea, stomach pain, body aches, headache, and fever, and typically resolve within one to three days. However, norovirus leads to approximately 19 to 21 million illnesses, 109,000 hospitalizations, 900 deaths, and 465,000 emergency department visits each year in the U.S., primarily affecting young children and older adults. There have been 14 cruise outbreaks reported this year, with December seeing the highest number of cruise ship outbreaks. There is no specific medication for norovirus; treatment focuses on rehydration. Preventive measures include rigorous handwashing and cleaning surfaces with household disinfectants.
