U.S. Court Orders ByteDance to Sell TikTok by January 2025 or Face Ban
Dec 6, 2024, 05:03 PM
A U.S. federal appeals court has unanimously upheld a law requiring ByteDance, the China-based parent company of TikTok, to sell the popular video-sharing app to an American owner by January 19, 2025, or face a ban in the United States. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the law, passed by Congress in April and signed by President Joe Biden, is constitutional, dismissing TikTok's challenge. The decision brings TikTok closer to a potential nationwide ban over national security concerns related to its Chinese ownership and data collection practices. TikTok is expected to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
