Supreme Court Directs Centre to Frame Model Policy on Menstrual Leave for Women Employees on July 8
Jul 8, 2024, 08:31 AM
The Supreme Court of India has directed the Centre to frame a model policy on menstrual leave for women employees. The court has asked the Centre to hold consultations with states and other stakeholders to decide if a model policy can be framed. The court's decision came after disposing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking menstrual leave for women employees. The bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, observed that while menstrual leave could encourage women's participation in the workforce, it could also potentially lead to women being shunned from the workforce. The petition also addressed the need for menstrual leave for female students, proposing two or three days of leave per month. The directive was issued on July 8.
