Sep 18, 2024, 01:40 AM
Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) was detained at Krakow airport in Poland on September 17, 2024. The reasons for his detention were initially unclear, but it was later described as a misunderstanding. Usyk was released after the intervention of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian diplomats. Usyk's wife and camp manager reassured the public that everything was fine and that the situation was resolved quickly. Usyk, who was en route to London to watch the Anthony Joshua fight, expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian diplomats and the Polish police for their professional conduct. Usyk was reportedly handcuffed during the incident.
