Ukrainian Boxing Champion Oleksandr Usyk Detained and Released at Krakow Airport, Zelensky Calls It a Misunderstanding
Sep 17, 2024, 08:54 PM
Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) was detained at Krakow Airport in Poland on September 17, 2024. The circumstances surrounding his detention were initially unclear, but it was later confirmed that it was a misunderstanding. Usyk's wife, Kateryna, and his friend, Serge Lapin, reassured the public that there was nothing criminal involved. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his outrage over the incident and instructed Ukrainian diplomats to intervene. Zhan Beleniuk, the First Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Youth and Sports, also commented on the situation. Usyk was subsequently released, and he thanked the Ukrainian diplomats and the Polish police for their efficient handling of the situation. Usyk was on his way to London to attend the fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois.
