Russia Unveils New Nuclear Doctrine, Lowering Threshold Amid Ukraine Conflict
Oct 8, 2024, 05:02 AM
Russia has unveiled a new nuclear doctrine, lowering its threshold for nuclear engagement while continuing its invasion of Ukraine. The doctrine updates, proposed by President Vladimir Putin, cite new threats but do not signify a radical departure from previous policies, writes Rajoli Siddharth Jayaprakash. This move has raised concerns globally, with the U.S. making recent nuclear strategy adjustments that may impact the international strategic balance, says Li Yan from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations. Russia's Foreign Ministry has acknowledged NATO's increasing role of nuclear weapons in its strategy, reported RIA. Despite rising nuclear tensions, Russia maintains emergency hotlines with the U.S. and NATO for urgent communications. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko emphasized that the updates are meant to ensure Moscow's security by all available means.
