Linda Lavin, Tony-Winning 'Alice' Star, Dies at 87 from Lung Cancer Complications
Dec 30, 2024, 01:05 PM
Linda Lavin, a Tony Award-winning stage actress best known for her role as a paper-hat-wearing waitress on the TV sitcom 'Alice,' has died on Sunday at the age of 87. Lavin passed away in Los Angeles due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer, her representative, Bill Veloric, told The Associated Press in an email. She became a working-class icon for her portrayal of Alice Hyatt, a widowed mother working in a roadside diner. Lavin was also a revered Broadway performer, earning acclaim and a Tony Award for her work on stage. She was working as recently as this month promoting the new Netflix series 'No Good Deed.' "When I read a script that I love, I have to be there," she once said. "'Cause it's what I do. It's very much who I am. I want to be in the room where it happens."
