Tony-Winning 'Alice' Star Linda Lavin Dies at 87 After Lung Cancer Battle
Dec 30, 2024, 11:00 AM
Linda Lavin, the Tony Award-winning Broadway actress best known for her role as Alice Hyatt in the hit CBS sitcom 'Alice,' has died at the age of 87 due to lung cancer. Lavin's decades-long career spanned stage and screen, with recent appearances in CBS's 'Elsbeth,' Netflix's 'No Good Deed,' and the upcoming Hulu series 'Mid-Century Modern' alongside Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer. 'Alice,' which aired from 1976 to 1986, was set in Phoenix and featured Lavin as a widowed mother working as a paper-hat-wearing waitress in a roadside diner. She became a working-class icon and a role model for working mothers. Lavin was also an advocate for women's rights, marching in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and inspiring women with her character's independence and resilience.
