Her death was due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer. Lavin's career spanned both stage and screen, with her Broadway success beginning in the 1960s and culminating in a Tony win for her performance in Neil Simon's 'Broadway Bound' in 1987. On television, she became a household name playing a widowed mother and waitress in 'Alice,' which aired from 1976 to 1985.
