World Population to Reach 8.09 Billion on New Year's Day After 71 Million Increase, U.S. at 341 Million

The world population is set to reach 8.09 billion on New Year's Day, following an increase of more than 71 million people in 2024, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. This represents a 0.9% growth rate, a slight slowdown from the previous year's increase of 75 million. The U.S. population itself grew by 2.6 million in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year's Day. In January 2025, the global population is expected to see 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths every second. In the U.S., projections indicate one birth every 9 seconds, one death every 9.4 seconds, and one person added through international migration every 23.2 seconds, resulting in a net population increase of one person every 21.2 seconds. The U.S. has experienced a 2.9% growth rate in the 2020s, compared to a 7.4% growth rate in the 2010s, which was the lowest since the 1930s.
