Global Population Hits 8.09 Billion on New Year's Day After 71 Million Increase, U.S. at 341 Million

The global population increased by more than 71 million people in 2024, reaching a total of 8.09 billion on New Year's Day, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. This represents a 0.9% increase, marking a slight slowdown from the previous year's growth of 75 million people. In the United States, the population grew by 2.6 million people in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year's Day. The Census Bureau projects that in January 2025, there will be 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths worldwide every second. In the U.S., the expected rate is one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.4 seconds, with international migration adding one person every 23.2 seconds. The combination of these factors is expected to increase the U.S. population by one person every 21.2 seconds. Since the start of the 2020s, the U.S. population has grown by almost 9.7 million people, reflecting a 2.9% growth rate, which is higher than the 7.4% growth rate observed in the 2010s, the lowest since the 1930s.
