The world population is projected to reach 8.09 billion on New Year's Day, following an increase of more than 71 million people in 2024, according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Monday. This represents a 0.9% growth rate for the year, marking a slight slowdown from the previous year when the population grew by 75 million. In January 2025, global birth and death rates are expected to be 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths per second, respectively. The United States saw its population grow by 2.6 million people in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year's Day. The U.S. anticipates one birth every 9 seconds, one death every 9.4 seconds, and an addition of one person every 23.2 seconds through international migration, resulting in a net population increase of one person every 21.2 seconds. Over the course of the 2020s, the U.S. population has grown by nearly 9.7 million people, reflecting a 2.9% growth rate, which is lower than the 7.4% growth rate seen in the 2010s, the lowest since the 1930s.
