Mexico's Senate Approves AMLO's National Guard Military Command Reform
Sep 25, 2024, 03:12 PM
Mexico's Senate has approved a constitutional reform that will place the National Guard under military command, despite warnings that it could give the armed forces excessive power. The reform, backed by 86 votes from Morena, PT, PVEM, and one from Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez, was seen as a significant move by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). The National Guard will now fall under the control of Sedena (the Ministry of National Defense). The move has been criticized for potentially increasing military influence over civilian security operations.
