Russia Expels British Diplomat Edward Wilkes Over Espionage; UK Ambassador Summoned
Nov 26, 2024, 12:27 PM
Russia has expelled a British diplomat, identified as Edward Pryor Wilkes, accusing him of espionage and subversive activities threatening the country's security. Wilkes, the second secretary of the political department at the British Embassy in Moscow, was alleged by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to have provided false information when applying for diplomatic accreditation and to have conducted intelligence work. The FSB claimed signs of intelligence and subversive activities, adding that Wilkes was sent to replace one of six British diplomats expelled in August. In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned British Ambassador Nigel Casey to lodge a strong protest, stating that Moscow would not tolerate the UK's hostile actions. This incident comes amid strained relations between Russia and the UK.
