China Reaches 1,200 GW Renewable Energy Target Six Years Early
Aug 29, 2024, 02:22 AM
China has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy development by reaching its 2030 wind and solar power target of 1,200 gigawatts six years ahead of schedule. As of July 2024, the country's installed solar and wind capacity reached 1,206 gigawatts, contributing to 14% of its electricity generation this year. Xi Jinping's ten-year plan to build this capacity was realized in just four years. China's installed capacity of renewable energy reached 1.68 billion kWh, accounting for 54% of the country's total power generation capacity. This achievement is part of China's broader commitment to tackling climate change, as outlined in a recently released white paper titled 'China's Energy Transition.' The document highlights China's historic breakthroughs in green energy development, noting that clean energy accounted for 26.4% of the country's total energy use in 2023, up from 15.5% in 2013. Additionally, the share of coal in China's energy consumption has dropped significantly. The white paper emphasizes China's role as a global leader in energy transition and its efforts to improve industrial and supply chains for clean energy.
