China Leads Global Renewable Energy Push with Double the Combined Wind and Solar Capacity of Other Countries
Jul 11, 2024, 06:39 AM
China is leading the global push for renewable energy by building nearly double the combined wind and solar capacity of all other countries, according to a Global Energy Monitor report. In May 2024, clean energy generated a record-high 44% of China's electricity, reducing coal's share to a record low of 53%, down from 60% in May 2023. Notably, 23% of China's electricity now comes from solar and wind energy. The country is on track to achieve 1,200 GW of installed wind and solar capacity by the end of 2024, six years ahead of its target. Almost two-thirds of big wind and solar plants under construction globally are in China. This surge in renewable energy capacity is part of China's broader strategy to address climate change and transition to sustainable energy sources. By 2030, the proportion of non-fossil fuel power generation capacity in China is expected to approach 70%, driving the share of non-fossil fuel energy consumption to exceed 25%.
