Snap Unveils Fifth-Gen Spectacles AR Glasses with Snap OS at Santa Monica Summit for $99/Month
Sep 17, 2024, 06:20 PM
Snap Inc. has unveiled the fifth generation of its augmented reality (AR) glasses, Spectacles, at the Snap Partner Summit 2024 in Santa Monica, California. The new Spectacles are powered by a proprietary operating system, Snap OS, and feature significant upgrades including a 46-degree field of view, 37 pixels per degree resolution, and a battery runtime of 45 minutes. The glasses are equipped with two Snapdragon processors and a miniature LCOS projector. They also include transition lenses for indoor and outdoor use and a see-through waveguide. CEO Evan Spiegel demonstrated the device's capabilities, highlighting features such as hand interactions and AI integration. The Spectacles are available to developers for $99 per month, with no developer tax, and are not yet targeted towards consumers. Partnerships with companies like Niantic and Lego aim to enhance the AR experience. Despite these advancements, Snap continues to face challenges in its core advertising business.
