German-Iranian Activist Nahid Taghavi Released from Evin Prison, Returns to Germany After 1,500 Days
Jan 13, 2025, 09:34 AM
German-Iranian dual national Nahid Taghavi has been released from Iran's Evin Prison after more than 1,500 days of detention and has returned to Germany. Taghavi, a 69-year-old architect and human rights activist, was arrested in October 2020 by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and accused of membership in an illegal group. She spent seven months in solitary confinement during interrogation and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison by a Revolutionary Court. Her daughter, Mariam Claren, campaigned extensively for her mother's release. German officials, including Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, welcomed her return. Amnesty International Germany confirmed her release, noting she endured more than four years of imprisonment. Her release comes ahead of planned meetings between German and Iranian officials.
