German-Iranian Activist Nahid Taghavi Released After 1,500 Days in Iran's Evin Prison, Returns to Germany
Jan 13, 2025, 10:14 AM
Nahid Taghavi, a 69-year-old German-Iranian women's rights activist, has been released from Iran's Evin Prison after more than 1,500 days of incarceration and has returned to Germany. Taghavi was arrested in October 2020 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps while staying in Iran and spent over seven months in solitary confinement before being sentenced to ten years and eight months in prison on charges of "propaganda against the state" and membership in an illegal group. Her release was announced by her daughter, Mariam Claren, who expressed joy at her mother's return and requested privacy. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed Taghavi's release, expressing relief at her return. Amnesty International confirmed her release, stating, "Her ordeal is over." Taghavi's release comes ahead of scheduled talks between Iranian officials and representatives from Britain, France, and Germany in Geneva. There are no indications of a prisoner exchange associated with her release.
