Iran Executes 31 Women in 2024, Highest in 17 Years: IHR
Jan 6, 2025, 05:05 PM
In 2024, Iran executed at least 31 women, marking the highest annual number of female executions in the country in 17 years, according to the Norway-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights (IHR). This figure represents the peak in a period during which IHR documented a total of 241 women executed from 2010 to 2024. The majority of these executions were for murder and drug-related offenses. IHR highlighted that many of the women executed for murder were victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse, acting out of desperation. The surge in executions comes two years after the start of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement, which has been linked to increased capital punishment as a means to suppress dissent.
