Iran Executes Over 1,000 in 2024, Including 34 Women and 7 Juveniles, Highest in 30 Years: NCRI
Jan 3, 2025, 12:41 PM
In 2024, Iran executed over 1,000 prisoners across 86 prisons, marking the highest number of executions in the country in three decades, according to a report by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The executions included 34 women, seven juvenile offenders, 119 Baluchis, and 70 Afghan nationals, with four public hangings reported. This represented a 300% increase over the prior year. The surge in executions was particularly notable in the last quarter of the year, with 47% of the total occurring during this period. On the first day of 2025, at least 12 prisoners were executed in Qezel Hesar, Bandar Abbas, Yasuj, and Malayer prisons. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, stated that these executions represent a desperate attempt by the regime to suppress public uprisings demanding its overthrow, yet they have only strengthened the resolve of Iran's youth to topple the religious dictatorship. Rajavi emphasized that the international community must ostracize the regime and condition any dealings with it on halting executions and torture, while its leaders should be held accountable for 45 years of crimes against humanity and genocide. According to Amnesty International, Iran's executions in 2023 accounted for about 74% of all documented executions worldwide.
