Iran Executes 901 in 2024, Highest Since 2015, Including 31 Women Linked to Drug Offenses and Protests

In 2024, Iran executed at least 901 people, marking the highest number of executions since 2015, according to the United Nations human rights office. Among those executed were 31 women, the highest annual figure in 17 years, as reported by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR). The majority of the executions were related to drug offenses, but also included political dissidents and individuals linked to the 2022 mass protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of executions year-on-year, calling for Iran to halt this rising tide. The UN noted a significant number of women executed were victims of domestic violence, child marriage, or forced marriage, with one woman executed for killing her husband to prevent him from raping her daughter.
