Canada's Deputy PM Freeland Resigns After Removal as Finance Minister
Dec 16, 2024, 04:18 PM
Canadian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has resigned from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet after being removed as Finance Minister last Friday. Freeland announced her resignation on December 16, 2024, citing disagreements over fiscal policy and how to respond to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's threat to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. In her resignation letter posted on social media platform X, she stated that she and Trudeau had been 'at odds' over the best path forward for Canada's economic future. Trudeau had offered her another position in the cabinet, but she declined.
