Uribe Calls for UN-Endorsed Military Intervention in Venezuela to Oust Maduro
Jan 11, 2025, 06:34 PM
Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has called for an international military intervention in Venezuela to oust the regime of Nicolás Maduro. Speaking at a political event in Cúcuta, near the Venezuelan border, Uribe advocated for an intervention preferably endorsed by the United Nations to remove 'those tyrants from power' and to immediately call for free elections. This call was made in response to Maduro's recent inauguration for the 2025-2031 term, which Uribe and other opposition figures claim was fraudulent. Uribe expressed support for Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, referring to them as 'universal champions of democracy.' Additionally, former President Iván Duque echoed Uribe's sentiments, urging Edmundo González to call for an international humanitarian intervention to restore democracy in Venezuela and protect human rights. Duque suggested that such an intervention should be accompanied by a request to the International Criminal Court to expedite an arrest warrant for Maduro.
