NHRC Issues Notices as Delhi HC Investigates 14 Deaths at Asha Kiran Shelter Home
Aug 5, 2024, 08:08 AM
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Delhi government and the city's police chief following reports that 14 inmates died within a month at the Asha Kiran shelter home in Rohini. The Delhi High Court has described the deaths as a 'strange coincidence' and has directed the social welfare department secretary to visit the premises and file a report. Additionally, the court has ordered the Delhi Jal Board to test the quality of the water supplied to the shelter home and the condition of water in sewer pipelines, noting that nearly all deceased inmates had tuberculosis. An independent investigation has been requested in the petition filed.
