Iraq Urges Iran-Backed Militias to Disarm, Seeks Good Relations with US Under Trump

Iraq is attempting to persuade Iran-aligned armed factions within its borders to disarm or integrate into the country's official security forces, according to Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. This initiative comes amidst significant shifts in the Middle East, including the weakening of Iran's allies in Gaza and Lebanon and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria. Hussein emphasized that the presence of weapons outside state control is unacceptable and expressed hope that these groups would lay down their arms and join the government-controlled forces. The move is part of Iraq's effort to balance its relations with both the United States and Iran, especially with the incoming Trump administration. Hussein noted that while Iraq aims to maintain good relations with Washington, it is too early to predict Trump's policy towards Iraq or Iran.
