China Allocates $21 Million for Flood Relief as Xi Jinping Orders Assistance Amid Yangtze River Flooding
Jun 29, 2024, 01:40 PM
China is experiencing severe flooding due to incessant rainfall, affecting multiple regions including Guangxi, Anhui, Hunan, and Guizhou. The National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 150 million yuan (approximately $21 million) from the central budget to support the restoration of damaged schools, hospitals, and flood control facilities. In Zhenyuan, Guizhou, heavy rainfall led to 200 mm of rain in 12 hours, causing the Wuyang River to rise by 11 meters, exceeding historical records. The Yangtze River's water level at the Jiujiang hydrological station has reached the warning level of 20 meters. Water gushed out from the Dahekou Hydroelectric Plant in Chongqing as heavy rainfall battered the region. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all possible assistance to be provided to affected citizens. Local authorities in Hunan are using drones for flood prevention along the Zijiang River, which experienced its third flood of the year. Emergency supplies have been allocated to Hubei province to support flood control and disaster relief efforts.
