The incident took place around 6:46 a.m. when a masked gunman shot Thompson in the chest and fled eastbound on 6th Avenue on foot. Police are treating the attack as a targeted hit. UnitedHealth Group shares fell 2.7% in premarket trading following the news. Thompson was scheduled to speak at an investor meeting at the hotel later that day.
