President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Monday to reinstate over 8,400 service members who were discharged from the U.S. military for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine under Biden's mandate. The order will direct the Secretary of Defense to restore these service members to their previous rank and provide them with full back pay and benefits. This move fulfills a campaign promise made by Trump in 2024 to reinstate those dismissed under the Biden administration's vaccine mandate, which was in effect from 2021 to 2023. Only 43 of the discharged service members had returned to service after the mandate was repealed in 2023. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also pledged support for this initiative, emphasizing the restoration of rank and back pay for the affected troops.
