Iran Frees Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi on 21-Day Medical Leave After Tumor Surgery
Dec 4, 2024, 12:05 PM
Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been temporarily released from prison for medical reasons, her lawyer Mostafa Nili announced. The Tehran prosecutor's office suspended her prison sentence for 21 days on the advice of the medical examiner due to her deteriorating health condition following surgery to remove a tumor and perform a bone graft 21 days ago. Mohammadi, who has been incarcerated since November 2021, has been suffering from various health issues, including heart disease, and is reportedly unable to walk. She was transferred from Evin Prison by ambulance to receive medical care. Her family has criticized the temporary release as 'too little, too late.' Mohammadi's bail was set at eight billion tomans.
