Jan 21, 2025, 02:30 PM
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi has announced his resignation, effective March 6, 2025, taking responsibility for the military's failure during the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. In his resignation letter and a televised statement, Halevi stated, "I take full responsibility for the army's failure on October 7, 2023. The terrible failure haunts me every day and every hour." He called for an external committee to investigate the failures. He informed Defense Minister Israel Katz of his decision, citing the IDF's inability to prevent the surprise assault by Hamas that resulted in significant casualties and kidnappings. Additionally, the head of the IDF's Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, has also resigned.
