Trump Signals Intent to Re-engage with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Summit Diplomacy, Following FOX News Interview
Jan 24, 2025, 02:37 AM
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to reach out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again, signaling a potential resumption of summit diplomacy between the two nations. This statement was made during an interview with FOX News, where Trump expressed his belief that he had previously solved the North Korea problem and described Kim as a 'smart guy' and not a 'religious zealot.' Trump's comments come after his first term, during which he met with Kim three times, including the historic Singapore summit in June 2018, the Hanoi summit in February 2019, and a meeting at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom in June 2019. The last working-level nuclear talks between the U.S. and North Korea were held in Stockholm in October 2019. The prospect of renewed engagement follows a period where North Korea had largely cut off communication channels with the U.S. under the previous administration, focusing instead on enhancing its nuclear and missile capabilities and strengthening ties with Russia.
