Ivy League Graduate Luigi Mangione Charged with Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Dec 11, 2024, 04:30 PM
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate and grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, has been arrested and charged with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. Thompson, 50, was shot and killed on December 4 while walking to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a cashier recognized him while he ordered hash browns. Authorities allege that Mangione considered using a bomb to assassinate Thompson but decided against it to avoid harming innocent bystanders. A notebook detailing plans for the attack was reportedly found in his possession. Mangione's parents had reportedly not heard from him in months. His attorney, Thomas Dickey, has stated that there is "no evidence" linking his client to the killing and that Mangione intends to plead not guilty. The suspect is currently fighting extradition to New York.
