US Supreme Court Clears Extradition of 26/11 Convict Tahawwur Rana to India
Jan 25, 2025, 05:20 AM
The US Supreme Court has cleared the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, to India, dismissing his writ of certiorari on Saturday. Rana is accused of playing a key role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed over 170 people. He allegedly provided a blueprint of the attacks to Lashkar-e-Taiba and helped David Headley, a co-conspirator, open an immigration firm in Mumbai to facilitate reconnaissance. Rana had previously lost legal battles in federal courts and is currently detained in Los Angeles. India has been seeking his extradition for 16 years to bring him to justice. Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam hailed the decision as a major victory for India, stating that Rana's extradition could expose sensitive revelations.
