Syrian Rebels Free 3,500 Prisoners, Seize Sednaya 'Human Slaughterhouse' Prison
Dec 8, 2024, 12:27 AM
Syrian rebels, including Druze factions from Suwayda province, have captured several key prisons and facilities across the country, releasing thousands of detainees—including women and children—as they advance towards Damascus. The opposition forces seized control of Sednaya Prison, known as the 'Human Slaughterhouse' for its brutal torture and executions. Rebel factions also took over Homs Central Prison, releasing over 3,500 inmates from the military facility. Additional prisons liberated include Adra Central Prison in Damascus, Saasaa prison (Branch 220) in the Damascus countryside, Qaboun Prison, and al-Balouneh prison in Homs. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) captured numerous regime checkpoints and military bases, signaling a significant collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. The rebels are now reportedly just a few kilometers away from central Damascus, with negotiations underway for the surrender of remaining regime forces.
