Taiwan Probes Shunxin39 Freighter for Undersea Cable Damage Near Yehliu, Seeks South Korea's Help
Jan 5, 2025, 06:48 AM
Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) is investigating a Cameroon-registered freighter, identified as "Shunxin39," for allegedly damaging an undersea communications cable near Yehliu in New Taipei on January 4. Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecom operator, reported the damage to its four-core undersea cable and suspects the freighter's involvement, possibly due to anchor-dragging. A Keelung Coast Guard patrol boat located the vessel seven nautical miles north of Yehliu and ordered it to return to waters off Keelung port for further investigation. Chunghwa Telecom activated its emergency response, ensuring no disruption to domestic communications as backup systems restored services promptly. Taiwan has also sought assistance from South Korea in investigating the incident, as the vessel reportedly continued its journey toward Pusan. The CGA has collected preliminary evidence, which will be submitted to prosecutors for further action.
